Place Vendôme

After her jeweler husband’s suicide, Marianne Malivert (Catherine Deneuve) finds diamonds in his safe that might help her take charge of her life again. This film made an impact largely thanks to its star’s performance as an alcoholic woman in elegant environs who’s trying to regain the independence she once had, tangling with people from her past. Deneuve is convincing and it’s interesting to see Emmanuelle Seigner’s character reflect Marianne when she was young. However, the film’s slow pace and convoluted plot guarantee a lack of thrills.

1998-France. 117 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Nicole Garcia. Screenplay: Jacques Fieschi, Nicole Garcia. Cast: Catherine Deneuve (Marianne Malivert), Jean-Pierre Bacri (Jean-Pierre), Emmanuelle Seigner (Nathalie), Jacques Dutronc, Bernard Fresson, François Berléand.

Venice: Best Actress (Deneuve).
