The School for Good and Evil

THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.

Two teenage girls (Sofia Wylie, Sophia Anne Caruso) are transported to a fairy-tale world where they are enrolled in different schools, one for Good and one for Evil. An adaptation of the popular fantasy novel that clearly has sequels in its sight, but in spite of Paul Feig’s best intentions the film is unable to overcome how generic it feels. There’s nothing wrong with how it looks; visual effects and costume design, along with stars in the supporting cast, make it a colorful experience. But it’s also overlong, with a plot that’s familiar from many genre predecessors.

2022-U.S. VOD. 147 min. Color. Directed by Paul Feig. Screenplay: David Magee, Paul Feig. Novel: Soman Chainani. Costume Design: Renee Ehrlich Kalfus. Cast: Sofia Wylie (Agatha), Sophia Anne Caruso (Sophie), Charlize Theron (Lady Leonora Lesso), Kerry Washington, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh… Patti LuPone. Narrated by Cate Blanchett.

Trivia: Co-produced by Feig.
