The Good Fight

A spin-off to The Good Wife (2009-2016) that followed two of its supporting characters, Diane Lockhart and Lucca Quinn (Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo), at a new Chicago law firm where its history of Black ownership played a prominent part. Feminism and civil rights would continue to dominate this irresistible dramedy throughout its run as it angrily, entertainingly and insightfully prodded the depressing state of the union in times of Trump and an increasingly conservative Supreme Court. The stories often stayed very close to current events and offered numerous treats for fans of The Good Wife, adding to the world built on that show. In later seasons, the series also kept challenging the nature of justice and the law. Brilliant title sequence (both music and design), literally blowing things up.

2017-2022:U.S. 60 episodes. Color. Created by Robert King, Michelle King, Phil Alden Robinson. Theme: David Buckley. Cast: Christine Baranski (Diane Lockhart), Audra McDonald (Liz Reddick, 18-22), Cush Jumbo (Lucca Quinn, 17-20), Delroy Lindo (17-20), Sarah Steele, Nyambi Nyambi, Michael Boatman, Gary Cole, Rose Leslie (17-19), Justin Bartha (17-18), Erica Tazel (17-18), Charmaine Bingwa (21-22), Michael Sheen (19), Zach Grenier (20), John Larroquette (20), Mandy Patinkin (21), John Slattery (22), Andre Braugher (22).

Last word: “A lot of romantic comedies have fake dilemmas. One coughs, and the other doesn’t like coughing. This goes to the heart of what’s causing problems in our time: this political split that has seemed to overtake religion as the most important thing in people’s lives. Christine Baranski created the line at the end, where Kurt asks, ‘What are we going to do?’ and Diane answers, ‘A lot of sex and pasta.’ One of the ways across the divide is these animalistic pleasures in life, like food and sex.” (Robert King, The New York Times)
