Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths

Daniel Giménez Cacho. Photo: Netflix

The director’s first film in seven years is his most personal to date, a return to Mexico that echoes his own life (as a successful, privileged global citizen) and the history of the country where he was born. The story follows an acclaimed journalist and documentary filmmaker (Daniel Giménez Cacho) who’s made a life for himself in L.A.; the journey back to Mexico where he’s set to accept an award is filled with memories and fantasies. Dreamlike, with gorgeous visuals, but none of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s disparate themes and ideas really stick.

2022-Mexico. 160 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed and edited by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Screenplay: Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone. Cinematography: Darius Khondji. Cast: Daniel Giménez Cacho (Silverio Gama), Griselda Siciliani (Lucía Gama), Ximena Lamadrid (Camila Gama), Iker Sanchez Solano, Jay O. Sanders, Andrés Almeida.

Trivia: Original title: Bardo, falsa crónica de unas cuantas verdades. Co-produced by Iñárritu.
