The Mother

Jennifer Lopez. Photo: Netflix

After exposing a human trafficking ring run by men she used to do business with, an operative (Jennifer Lopez) finds herself trying to protect her 12-year-old daughter (Paez) from her former associates. J.Lo as an action hero? It’s a refreshing change of pace for the star, and her performance as a woman whose past comes back to haunt her is one of the film’s best ingredients. Too bad though that there’s absolutely nothing here that deviates from a well-worn formula and the action isn’t thrilling enough to make us ignore glaring plot holes. Good use of locations, though.

2023-U.S. VOD. 117 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Niki Caro. Cast: Jennifer Lopez (The Mother), Joseph Fiennes (Adrian Lovell), Omari Hardwicke (William Cruise), Lucy Paez (Zoe), Gael García Bernal, Paul Raci… Edie Falco.
