The Equalizer

When retired government operative Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) tries to help a prostitute (Chloë Grace Moretz) that he has befriended, he makes dangerous enemies in the shape of Russian mobsters. A clichéd adaptation of the 1985-1989 TV series that featured Edward Woodward as a gentlemanly but tough vigilante. Washington fills that role well and this dark action thriller starts promisingly thanks to him and convincingly evil opponents. But as we realize that McCall is such a superior foe to the Russians that he’s never really in true danger, tension dissipates.

2014-U.S. 132 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Antoine Fuqua. Music: Harry Gregson-Williams. Cast: Denzel Washington (Robert McCall), Marton Csokas (Teddy/Nicolai Itchenko), Chloë Grace Moretz (Alina), Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Johnny Skourtis… David Harbour, Haley Bennett.
