The Old Oak

IT’S NOT WHERE YOU’RE FROM, IT’S WHAT YOU BRING.

When a group of Syrian refugees arrive in a former mining community in northern England, racism awaits them… but also people who open their arms, including pub owner T.J. Ballantyne (Dave Turner). Ken Loach and his steadfast writing companion Paul Laverty find a highly relevant message for this sentimental but effective drama: men and women who are at a disadvantage in society, such as refugees and unemployed workers, need to stand as one. Some may find this story a tad too manipulative and simple, but it’s quietly moving and the cast is first-rate, especially Turner.

2023-U.K.-Belgium-France. 113 min. Color. Directed by Ken Loach. Screenplay: Paul Laverty. Cast: Dave Turner (T.J. Ballantyne), Ebla Mari (Yara), Claire Rodgerson (Laura), Trevor Fox, Chris McGlade, Col Tait.
