The Other Side of Hope

Life changes for two men in Helsinki: Waldemar Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen), who leaves his wife and sells his business, and Khaled Ali (Sherwan Haji), who arrives in the city on a ship and applies for asylum. Aki Kaurismäki was lauded for this film that attempted to show Finns what life is like from a refugee’s perspective, as the authorities want Ali to go back to Aleppo even though we can see on the news what the war is doing to that place. Much is familiar from the director’s earlier films, not least Le Havre (2011), but there are touching and amusing scenes, true to Kaurismäki’s style.

2017-Finland-Germany. 98 min. Color. Produced, written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki. Cast: Sherwan Haji (Khaled Ali), Sakari Kuosmanen (Waldemar Wikström), Ilkka Koivula (Calamnius), Janne Hyytiäinen, Nuppu Koivu, Kaija Pakarinen… Kati Outinen, Jörn Donner.
